A short drive (approx. 5 miles) on CR5 out of Ridgway takes you to the junction of CR5 and CR5A. From this point, a 5.4 mile 4×4 road leads you to the Burn Hut. This 4×4 road can be impassable when wet. The Burn Hut can also be accessed via the Dallas Trail. This access is the eastern terminus of the Dallas Trail and is approximately 7 miles south on the ‘frontage road’ CR 17.
Hiking around the Burn Hut is enjoyable for people of all abilities, this is due not only to the variety of the terrain, but to the views of both the Cimmaron and the Sneffels ranges as well as the La Sals out in Utah.
Travel on 4×4 roads and then the Dallas Trail that leads to the Ridgway Hut.
Hike east on the Dallas Trail descending through aspen groves, meadows, and along sandstone cliffs down into the mountain town of Ouray where natural hot springs, pubs, and ice cream all await.
This is hands down our favorite weekend ride! Although this loop can be done in one push, we find it far more enjoyable to make a weekend out of it. You start your climb right from the town of Ridgway and are primarily on single lane dirt and 4×4 roads up to the Burn Hut passing through parks and aspen groves with views of the entire Sneffels Range. The next day’s ride is all on the east end of the Dallas Trail and downhill to the town of Ouray where natural hot springs, pubs and ice cream await. You can either leave a vehicle here, or ride the 20 minutes on dirt road back to Ridgway. Basing out of a B&B in Ridgway or Ouray makes this a real weekend treat. There is additional single track around Ridgway if you want to get a few more miles in on either end of your trip.

This tour traverses west along the Sneffels Range for 5.7 miles through meadows and forests.
This is a gladed area for fun turns at a moderate level that lies northeast of the hut.
This is an open area of about 400′ of vertical drop that lies directly south and above the hut. This area generally has very low avalanche danger.
“The Burn Hut is a fine destination for beginning and intermediate skiers, mixed groups, and aspiring backcountry skiers who may not be ready to cope with serious avalanche hazards and complicated route-finding. The route to the hut is somewhat long for a novice-level tour, but overall it is very moderate. The trail follows a low-gradient road, which is challenging but not overwhelming, and you get the beautiful panoramas associated with harder tours in the area.
The Burn Hut is just across Coal Creek in a stately stand of aspens. Now all of the high peaks to the south are visible, framed through the pale limbs of the trees. The final mile of the tour to The Burn Hut is the steepest. The hut is surrounded by meadows, forests, and rolling hills that are ideal for all levels of skiers to explore. Moonshine Park lies to the east of the hut and provides for superb skiing. Far below, is Ouray and, further off in the east is the Cimarron Group of the San Juan Mountains. This is the only spot in the San Juan Hut System where this view can be seen. It is truly incredible.”

The summer trailhead is located about 9 miles up CR5 southwest of Ridgway and the hike in is 2.7 miles west on the Dallas Trail through forests and crossing two streams.
A short 1-hour hike leads to the ridge directly south and above the hut. This ridge leads to commanding views of the north faces of Mount Sneffels, Cirque Mountain, and Tea Kettle. The ridge continues to a relatively easy walk up to Reconnoiter Peak from the south.
This tour traverses eastward along the Sneffles Range for 4.2 miles through meadows and forests.
This is a 5 mile hike. It starts up a short hill to the top of Wilson Creek Summit/Pass, and then leads you to a long swithcback descent to the creek bottom. From here it is a gentle descent to The Blue Lakes Hut.
After summiting Reconnoiter Peak described above, continue eastward along the ridge that connects to Ridgway Peak. After summiting Ridgway Peak, it is even possible to continue on to Whitehouse Peak.
Follow the ridge-line directly south and above the hut summiting first Reconnoiter, then Ridgway, and finally Whitehouse peaks. This is a long day, but quite doable for strong parties.
The Ridgway Hut is accessed by bike either from the Blue Lakes Hut and/or Trail Head, the Burn Hut, or the town of Ridgway. All these options travel primarily on the Dallas Trail.
Follow the Dallas Trail up to Wilson Creek Pass/Summit and then descend the, at times tight and winding trail, down to the Blue Lakes Trail Head or Hut.
Travel primarily downhill east on the Dallas Trail to 4×4 roads that lead to the Burn Hut.
These are excellent single-track trails with phenomenal views of the Sneffels Range and the Cimmarons. The single-track leads down into the City of Ouray where riders have the option of ending up at the hot springs, the pub, or their vehicle.

These Chutes, some of them well-known, provide some of the highest quality advanced skiing of all of our huts. All are north facing and usually have excellent snow quality conditions. Decents are 1,000 to 2,000 vertical feet each.
Intermediate tree skiing is found above and west of the hut across the timbered slope that leads to the Wilson Creek Pass.
The ridge above the hut leads to a south face scramble to the summit of Reconnoiter Peak and commanding views of the entire Sneffels Range.
“Ridgway Hut was the second hut erected in the San Juan Hut System. To this day, this premier ski hut remains popular. The route to the hut follows one of the most beautiful and scenic trails in the state, touring past rustic wooden fences and tall aspens up into the forest below Mount Ridgway.
Backcountry skiing around the Ridgway Hut is like tree skiing at a downhill area – minus the lifts, crowds, and draft beer. The skiing above the huts is best suited to intermediate and expert skiers. To fully enjoy the skiing above the hut, you must have at least intermediate downhill skills, as well as a solid understanding of backcountry safety and avalanche procedures. Be cautious of several large avalanche gullies south of the hut, and bear in mind that you will encounter serious wilderness skiing around this hut – so come prepared with the proper safety equipment and the proper mindset.
The telemark skiing above the hut is absolutely incredible. Climb directly south from the hut into thicker forest to the ridge. The skiing off this timbered ridge is superb and safe with telemark runs of up to 1,400 vertical feet. With a full day you can make several runs through this area, exploring the great snow. Expert skiers can continue up the ridge, past a high, rocky outcrop and up the wind-scoured ramp that gives access to the highest, above-tree-line ridge. This west-facing massive rock buttress that tops out at Elevation Point 11,786’ on the topo maps. In addition to the great telemark skiing, those willing to climb to the ridge will be treated to intimate views of Blaine Basin and the north faces of Mount Sneffels and Cirque Mountain. Skiers can explore above the hut to the south as far as tree line and spend hours, if not days, telemark skiing. Extreme skiing is available in the avalanche gullies, chutes, and basins above the hut near treeline.”

3.5 Miles and 1,600 feet of vertical elevation gain.
An enjoyable day hike up the Wilson Creek/Blaine Basin Trail to the Alpine Cirque of Blaine Basin under the 2,000’ face of Mt. Sneffels.
Gentle hikes through meadows and aspen groves on old trails and mining roads to the west of the hut
One mile up the Blue Lakes Trail a tributary stream that flows into the East Dallas Creek provides a great place for Kids to play in the water on a hot summer afternoon with big views of the rocky peaks surrounding.
A circumnavigation of Mt. Sneffels, with or without a summit are done from Blue Lakes Hut. A classic big day in the mountains entails hiking the Blue Lakes Trail past all three of the lakes to the top of Blue Lakes Pass (13,100′). From the pass there are two choices to climb mount Sneffles. The Big Day Route would be to ascend the southwest ridge directly from the pass to the summit. This is 4th class climbing with real exposure. NOT a route for a day with lightning potential. The less exposed route to the summit descends the east side of Blue Lakes Pass into the flower laden Yankee Boy Basin above the town of Ouray. Ascent of the peak is achieved from the east up the Lavender Couloir. Descent from both of these routes travels down the Lavender Couloir, dropping into upper Blaine Basin, and takes climbers into the north side environs of Mt. Sneffels and into the alpine cirque of Blaine Basin. Return to Blue Lakes Hut via the Wilson Creek Trail.
There are several rock/alpine variations up the north face. All require rock climbing gear and/or crampons and ice-tools, and alpine knowledge.

Park about 5 miles up CR 7 depending on road conditions. The ski-in is a gentle 5.5 mile tour up a summer dirt road.
The Blue Lakes Hut has great cross country trails leading off in 3 directions. It is the best hut in the system for cross country trail skiing and beginner skiers and families. There is also intermediate and advanced skiing above the hut in the alpine zone above tree line.
This hut is the best hut for families as it is appropriate for young skiers and pulling kids in toboggans. Once at the hut, there is great opportunity for kids to slide around on skis or sleds.
7.3 miles of classic cross country trails with spectacular views of the north slopes of the Sneffels Range.
A 5.5mile ski with an overall elevation gain of about 2,040 feet leads you to the top of Wilson Creek Summit/Pass. A treed 1.5 mile decent with excellent snow quality brings you to Ridgway Hut.
The Blue Lakes Hut has great cross country trails leading off in three directions.
Tremendous views from the summit and options to ski all three sides.
Start from the Camp Bird Mine near Ouray, climb the south side of Sneffels, ski down the renowned Dog Leg Couloir and finish at the Blue Lakes Hut to make your day a little shorter.

“Blue Lakes Hut lies below Mount Sneffels on a small bench above East Dallas Creek. One of the simplest of the San Juan huts to reach, Blue Lakes Hut is a good hut for beginners, intermediate and advance skiers. Nice skiing is available close to the hut; the surrounding hillsides are great for telemarking; and Cocan Flats and the East Fork of Dallas Creek make fine touring areas.
Skiing from Blue Lakes Hut to the North Pole Hut or the Ridgway Hut requires much more experience and stamina than is required to reach this hut from the trail head. The large, convoluted slopes and log cuts to the southwest of the hut are loaded with all levels and types of skiing. Many of these runs push up to near tree line. Feel free to explore.”

This is a 2-4 hours intermediate hike. Park at Box Factory Park (4×4 vehicle recommended) about 12 miles from Ridgway on West Dallas Creek/ CR 9 Hike west on the Dallas Trail for 3.1 miles to the North Pole Hut. This is an Intermediate hike with the north faces of the Sneffels Range directly above, all towering over 13,000 feet.
Intermediate hiking into the basin below the north face of Dark Horse/S-9 and Hayden peaks is a great day’s hike.
A beautiful 8.2-mile traverse through aspen and spruce with many small streams, parks, and meadows through the Sneffels Wilderness Area.
A spectacular 7.3 mile walk with phenomenal parks, meadows, and aspen groves.
Ascend the North Ridge of Hayden Peak to the summit of and views of the Island Ranges of Utah including the La Sals, The Abajos, and the Henrys (190 miles line of sight).
Traverse from the summit of Hayden (12,987′) to the summit of Dark Horse/S-9 (13,134′) with descent down “The Ramp” into the headwaters basin of West Dallas Creek underneath the towering north face of Mears Peak (13,496′).

Approach, 5-7 hours, Intermediate/Advanced. Drive up 2 to 3 miles up the West Dallas Road depending on road conditions (about 10 minutes form Ridgway). From where you park it is 8 to 11 miles to the hut. This is one of the longest but most visually impressive approaches to all of our Ski Huts.
Ski off the top of Hayden Peak (12,987′) to access multiple aspects decent possibilities, ranging from 25-35 degrees, throughout the winter.
Logging and mining trails under the north buttress of Hayden Peak provided access into this high alpine basin. This outing is also appropriate for snowshoes.
Approximately 7.5 miles of classic cross country trails with spectacular views of the north slopes of the Sneffels Range.
The most demanding section of trail on our Telluride to Ouray route exists on the Alder Creek Trail between Last Dollar and North Pole Huts. The difficulty is due to a 10-mile ski, challenging route finding, 8 points of significant avalanche danger, 2 of which must be dealt with great care and concern. A beautiful 10-mile traverse through aspen and spruce with many small streams, parks, and meadows through the Sneffels Wilderness area makes this challenging section of trail well worth it.
“Of the huts in the San Juan Hut System, the North Pole Hut is the most remote. You will not see day skiers here. The cabin rests in a small, aspen-lined clearing on the western edge of a large meadow, in the shadow of a wall of towering, rocky peaks. This location, with views of the peaks to the south, is one of the most breathtaking hut sites in all of the San Juans.
The hut makes for a rustic, warm, and cozy base camp for exploring the backcountry. One approaches the hut from the northeast, via West Dallas Creek Road and the Dallas Trail along an 8-10 mile approach. Much of the difficulty in approaching the North Pole Hut lies not in the elevation gain but, rather, in the distance and the complexity of route-finding during the final 3 miles of the approach trail. This challenging stretch of trail comes at the end of what is already a long day. If you dillydally at the trailhead and get a late start, you may end up with the added factor of darkness. Reaching the hut from the Last Dollar Hut is no easier and presents its own set of challenges. For the strong, experienced route finder, though, the powdery reward lying above the hut easily outweighs the high “grunt factor” on the approach. Ski mountaineers can tackle the north ridge of Hayden Peak (under appropriate conditions), while powder hounds can explore the many ridges and slopes found below tree line. Be advised of the large avalanche bowl tucked under the cliffs on the north wall of Hayden Peak’s north ridge. These tempting slopes can be skied, but only by knowledgeable skiers. This is very serious terrain.”

The Last Dollar Hut accommodates eight people via padded bunk style-beds. The hut includes a propane stove, propane lamp, wood stove, firewood, cookware, and utensils.
In the winter, water is obtained by melting snow. In the summer, water is provided in five gallon jugs for guests arriving by self-powered means (biking, hiking, etc). If guests are parking at Last Dollar Pass, we appreciate it if they carry their own water in.
The Last Dollar Hut (10,980′) sits 300 feet and 1/4 mile above Last Dollar Pass. There are direct views across the San Miguel River canyon and of the north faces of the Wilson Peaks. This hut is the furthest west, and closest to Telluride, of our Ski/Destination Huts and the first bike hut on the Northern Route. It can be used in conjunction with the North Pole Hut for multi-day adventures for those who have experience traveling in avalanche terrain.

The Last Dollar Hut is available for winter use from November 25th through June 1st, and for summer use from May 1st through November 30th. Because Last Dollar Hut is used on our Telluride to Moab Bike Route, it may not be available during summer months. It costs $30/person/night (maximum of 8 people). The information provided on this page is intended to give our guests ideas on potential activities at The Last Dollar Hut, but the possibilities are endless. We provide more detailed route descriptions only for the trails accessing the hut and between huts upon booking. Please note, the times given here are estimates of the total time needed for the outing.
Approach, 2-4 hours, Moderate/Intermediate. A relatively easy three mile ski up a south facing road with views of the Wilsons, Lizard Head, and the San Miguel River Basin. Keep your eyes out for carvings in the aspen trees along the road from the late 1800′s and early 1900′s.
A total decent of 5,000 feet is often done from the Last Dollar Hut due to the layout of the relatively ‘safe’ avi-chutes nearby. Individual ski run lengths vary from 500-2,000 feet of vertical drop. The times listed below are roundtrip from the hut, but most skiers choose to ski multiple chutes. Beware, ALL THESE SHOOTS CAN AND DO SLIDE!
“The Last Dollar Hut is one of the first two huts built in the San Juan Hut System. The hut has one of the most spectacular panoramic vistas in the state…the view overlooking the Silverton West Group of the San Juans, the Wilson Peaks, and the La Sal Mountains in Utah.
The closest hut to Telluride, the Last Dollar Hut is a fine destination for an overnight or long weekend trip. Consequently, this is one of the most popular of the San Juan Hut System huts and more than one group often books it. Less experienced skiers can simply take in the beautiful surroundings or they can ski the more limited moderate terrain.
Experienced backcountry skiers will find an abundance of day skiing beyond the hut to the east…the far east. Skiers make the approximately one-hour climb along the ridge to above tree line and then carefully ski the avalanche chutes and slopes that plunge off the broad north face of the ridge. Many of these avalanche runs do not appear on the USGS topo maps, but they are there, they are obvious, and, under the wrong conditions, they are dangerous. Under safe conditions these 1,000-2,000 foot runs provide superb skiing for experienced, advanced skiers. Separating these gullies and chutes are thick woods with generally tight, steep, technical tree skiing.
For an even better view of southwestern Colorado, an ascent to the ridge at tree line to the east makes a nice day trip. In addition, the hut has plenty of “front yard” for just sunning and enjoying the view.”
Either bike from Telluride traveling 13 miles up the single lane dirt road or park at the Last Dollar Pass and hike the 1/4 mile up the steep hill to the hut. This is the first hut on the Northern bike route from Telluride to Moab and this use is the priority of the Last Dollar Hut during the summer.
A beautiful 10 mile traverse on the Dallas Trail through aspen and spruce with many small streams, parks, and meadows through the Sneffles Wilderness Area.
Scramble to the summit of mount Han Shan for relatively easily attained spectacular views.
Hike to the summit of Whipple Mountain for great views of Lizard Head, the San Miguel Peaks above Telluride, the Wilsons, and the Island Ranges of Utah….need we say more?
A ridge-line traverse to Hayden Peak (12,987′), descending to North Pole Hut. Climb upwards and eastwards on the ridge that the Last Dollar Hut sits on to Han Shan (12,311′). From the summit of Han Shan, an airy traverse lies before you on the very defined ridge that traverses directly north to the summit of Hayden Peak. This traverse should NOT be attempted on lightning days. Your route across this spiny ridge will hold more or less directly to the crest of the ridge, depending upon your comfort with this exposed traverse. It is possible and sometimes preferable to deviate to the east side of the ridge to avoid the massive exposure on the west side of the ridge. From the summit of Hayden, descend into the deep basin that lies to the east-northeast of the summit. Once in the bottom of this basin, traverse north descending to the forest. Shortly after entering the forest, look for very steep game trails down through the trees to join up with an old mining and logging road that will continue descending to the north to join up with the Dallas trail. Once at the junction with the Dallas Trail, traverse westward on the Dallas Trail to locate the hut on the north end of a meadow slightly northwest of the large beaver ponds.
The Last Dollar biking terrain is primarily on dirt/jeep roads with splendid mesa views. This terrain is appropriate for bikers with Intermediate or above fitness levels and Moderate or above technical skills.
This is the first hut on the Northern bike route from Telluride to Moab and this use is the priority of the Last Dollar Hut during the summer.
The Last Dollar Hut can be used to do the two day, one night, trip from Telluride to Last Dollar Hut, and then Last Dollar Hut to Placerville for stunning mesa views.
