(1). Bikers’ Bible
Please make sure everyone in your group reads The Bikers’ Bible before your trip. This reference guide lists our Policies & Procedures, includes information for Planning Your Trip, talks about some things to expect On the Route, what you will find at The Hut & Hut Etiquette, and lists for suggested Clothing, Tools, and Repair Equipment. The Appendix provides suggested lodging and transportation/shuttle contact information. Download and print this Bikers’ Bible guide to bring with you. Below is a brief video overview of the Biker’s Bible.
(2). Waivers and Group Roster
Please make sure each member of your group has submitted a Terms Conditions & Liability Waiver. This is a link to the online form in case anyone in your group still needs to complete it. If you have any changes in your group, let our office know and make sure everyone who is actually going has turned in a waiver.
Minor Liability Waiver (only to be completed by parent/guardian for participants under 18 years of age).
Here is a link to the Group Roster form.
Please make sure to submit an up-to-date Group Roster reflecting any changes in riders. It is the Group Leader’s responsibility to make sure San Juan Hut Systems has a Group Roster with everyone who is actually going on the trip. If you have less than 8 riders, please enter N/A in the remaining fields.
(3). Plan Your Travel
Book your hotels for either end of the trip and make shuttle arrangements. We recommend that you make your shuttle and lodging arrangements well in advance as the summer season can be busy in these small towns. There is more information on the Travel Resources Page of our website.
(4). Route Descriptions
Download and print out the Telluride to Moab Route Description to bring with you on your ride. These include detailed turn-by-turn directions for the Standard Route as well as overviews of the singletrack Alternates. These help keep you on track, are really helpful if your phone or GPS device goes down, and give you an overview of the day.
(5). Elevation Profiles
Download the Telluride to Moab Elevation Profiles to prepare for your ride and help you gauge your days.
(6). GPS Tracks
Download this GPS track that provides a ‘breadcrumb’ trail of the entire trip including the singletrack alternates. You must use a GPS or mapping software to open the gpx file and download it onto your device. If you are using a Garmin Device, you must go through Garmin Basecamp or Garmin Explore. We do not recommend using Garmin Connect. Here is a list of Garmin Devices compatible with Garmin Explore and devices not compatible with Garmin Basecamp. If you do not want to bring a GPS, you can use phone apps like Gaia, but beware, this drains your phone battery. We recommend using the GPS as a backup to the Maps and Route Descriptions and suggest that you keep it turned off most of the time. Remember to keep your eyes on the terrain and not just follow your screen.
If you are using a Wahoo Device, Strava, or Ride with GPS, or are having trouble getting the above complete track onto your device, you can upload each individual daily tracks one at a time. If you do this, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EACH TRACK/S FOR EACH DAY as it would be easy to miss one and could be a real disappointment once you get out on the route.
(7). Final Payment
This payment is due 30 days prior to your departure date. You can click on the “Pay Now” button in the lower right corner of your booking invoice that was emailed to you at the time of booking.
(8). Add on Your Beer Package!
We work with a local liquor store to offer a beer service for those who desire to have 1 to 3 beers only at the first 5 huts during their ride. The last hut is in Utah and we are currently unable to provide this service in that state. The cost per person is $50 give or take a few dollars depending on the exact stock available and taxes. Please have one person call in to pay for the group. The charge will come through from LaJoy Enterprises in Montrose, Colorado as they are who you will actually be purchasing the beer from. We stock variety packs from several different (mainly Colorado) microbreweries so there are different types of beer, as well as gluten-free beer, Hard Cider, Hard Seltzer, and sparkling white wine (when supply allows). Please call us to pay for this service if you want to drink any beer. We are not able to accommodate any special requests. The person purchasing the Beer Package will need to complete this Liquor Waiver and email a photo ID showing they are at least 21 to info@sanjuanhuts.com before calling us at 970.626.3033 to place the order.
(9). Physical Maps
Look for a Map Set that will come to you in the U.S.P.S. We send one set to the group leader, but feel free to modify it in size or make extra copies for your riding partners.
(10). Make Sure You Have the Keycode
Once each group member has submitted their own Terms and Liability Waiver, and the trip is paid in full; we can email the door lock code. Make sure you have this code before starting your trip. If you have not received this code and your trip is getting near, please contact our office during normal business hours. Everyone in your group should write this code down and bring it with them.
(11). Check the Weather and Adjust Your Kit
The day before the start of your trip. Check the weather and adjust your kit accordingly. This is a good time to think hard about every single item you bring and see if you can consolidate group items. Usually less is more. The route will travel through high Alpine and hot deserts and you can be hypothermic or have heat stroke at different parts of the trip during any month of the season.
See the links below for current weather conditions on this route.
(12). Unplug, get on your bike, and go ride!
If you are planning to ride any of the cross-country trails at Telluride Resort on Day 1, please note that you need to be getting off the Gondola (at San Sophia Station) before 9am when the bike park opens (this means you need to get on the Gondola before 8:45 am!) There is also a seasonal closure of many resort trails through the end of June. Telluride Resort Trails info
