Planning a winter adventure to the San Juan Huts? These remote ski huts nestled in Colorado’s stunning backcountry offer unparalleled access to pristine skiing, breathtaking views, and cozy accommodations. However, packing for a ski hut trip requires careful planning to ensure you have everything you need for safety, comfort, and fun. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you pack like a pro for your San Juan Huts winter getaway.
1. Ski Gear Essentials
The right gear can make or break your ski hut experience. Pack these ski-specific items:
- Skis, Boots, and Poles: Backcountry touring skis or splitboards are ideal for navigating the terrain. Ensure your boots are well-fitted and compatible with your bindings. Don’t forget to leave your boots really loose for the approach when you are in “walk mode”.
- Climbing Skins: Essential for uphill travel if you have a standard backcountry set up; make sure they’re in good condition and cut to fit your skis. Skins are not needed if you are using a more cross country set up with fish scales which are appropriate to access some of our huts.
- Avalanche Safety Equipment: Always carry a beacon, shovel, and probe when in avalanche terrain, and ensure you know how to use them.
- Helmet and Goggles: Protect yourself from the elements and potential falls.
- Ski Wax and Repair Kit: Keep your skis in top shape and be prepared for minor fixes. Skin wax and / or an instant ski wax is a good idea especially in warmer temperatures or after resent snowfall.
2. Layered Clothing System
Dressing in layers allows you to regulate your body temperature during intense activity and rest periods. Here’s what to bring:
- Base Layers: Moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms.
- Mid Layers: Insulating jackets or fleeces for warmth.
- Puff Jacket: A warm down or synthetic jacket or parka.
- Outer Layers: Water and wind resistant shell jacket and pants.
- Accessories: Dark Sunglasses, Goggles, Warm hat, balaclava or neck gaiter, insulated gloves or mittens, and lightweight liner gloves.
- Socks: Bring multiple pairs of wool or synthetic ski socks.
3. Hut Essentials
San Juan Huts provide basic shelter, but you’ll need to pack these essentials to stay comfortable:
- Sleeping Bag: A lightweight, packable bag rated for winter temperatures.
- Headlamp: Make sure your headlight is fully charged or pack extra batteries to ensure you’re never in the dark.
- Food and Snacks: Opt for high-calorie meals that are easy to pack. Don’t forget trail snacks like energy bars and nuts.
- Water Bottles or Insulated Thermos: Stay hydrated and enjoy hot drinks on chilly evenings.
- Personal Items: Toiletries, glasses, and any medications you may need.
4. Safety and Navigation Tools
Safety is paramount in the backcountry. These items will keep you prepared:
- Map and Compass or GPS Device: Ensure you know the route and have a backup navigation method.
- First Aid Kit: Include essentials like bandages, blister treatments, and pain relievers.
- Repair Kit: Duct tape, ski strap, super glue, and leatherman are universal. May want to also include extra screws for bindings and a driver.
- Communication Device: A satellite phone or personal locator beacon for emergencies. These were not an option for most of the history of San Juan Huts but are now accessible for most people and a valuable tool.
5. Optional Comforts and Extras
If you have space and energy, consider packing a few extras to enhance your experience:
- Books or Small Games: For entertainment during downtime.
- Massage Ball: Help your muscles recover after a long day on the trails.
- Extra Socks, Camp Shoes, Slippers: Lightweight, packable footwear for relaxing in the hut. We normally wear extra socks and our boot liners but many prefer crocks or something similar.
- Battery Pack: For extended trips it might make sense to bring a small batter pack to charge devices if you plan to use them a lot.
Tips for Packing Smart
- Don’t Bring Too Much Stuff: “Take care of the ounces and the pounds will take care of themselves”
- Distribute Weight Evenly: Keep heavier items close to your back in your backpack.
- Pack Essentials in Waterproof Bags: Keep your gear dry in case of snow or spills.
- Water: Pack your water close to your back to prevent freezing in cold temps. Make sure all liquids are tightly sealed as getting your stuff wet in winter can be a safety hazard. Camelbak hoses can freeze and are not recommended. If you do use a camel back, make sure to blow air back into the hose after ever drink to prevent freezing.
